Aston Martin Racing doubles up with the drivers’ title for Thiim-Sorensen!
Endurance world championship – 8 hours of Bahrain #2
With thirty-nine points up for grabs, given the coefficient of 1.5 given to this eight-hour race, the FIA WEC drivers’ world title race remained wide open in Bahrain, despite the top two places being held by the ASTON MARTIN RACING crews going into this final weekend. However, Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen in the No. 95 Vantage AMR wasted no time in confirming their intention to sign off the 2020 season with the title. Second in qualifying, having missed out on pole position by just 0.016 seconds, they then settled for fifth place in the race to secure the drivers’ world title in the LMGTE Pro category. The Danish pair thus claimed their second championship together in the category after their victory in 2016, after a season in which they scored three race wins (6 Hours of Fuji, 8 Hours of Bahrain #1 and Lone Star Le Mans) and two further podium finishes (2nd at the 6 Hours of Spa and 3rd at the 24 Hours of Le Mans). “It has been an incredibly difficult year, both on and off the track,” said a delighted Sorensen at the finish. “The Aston Martin Vantage AMR has enabled us to fight at the front, pretty much the entire year. It’s a dream come true for any driver, because all you have to do then is push! We have proven this year that with a car like this, we could win races and a championship.” Meanwhile, the No. 97 sister car – driven here by Maxime Martin and Richard Westbrook – managed to grab fourth position in the race, and seal the runners-up spot in the championship. The two crews’ performances therefore added up to an excellent team result for Aston Martin Racing! Finally, a word for the Signatech Alpine Elf driven by Thomas Laurent, Pierre Ragues and André Negrao, who finished fifth in class on the team’s final race in LMP2.
Having already wrapped up the FIA WEC manufacturers’ world title with its one-two finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Aston Martin Racing rounded off its season in style as its two crews secured the top two places in the drivers’ championship, despite Lynn being forced out of this final weekend due to Covid-19. A fitting outcome, given the extent to which the crews have dominated the season, winning a total of four races out of eight (three for Thiim-Sorensen and one for Martin-Lynn).
After winning the 4 Hours of Silverstone and claiming second position at the 6 Hours of Spa Francorchamps, Cool Racing end the season fourth, just shy of the podium places, in the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 teams, whilst Signatech Alpine Elf take sixth place, notably thanks to finishing on the podium (2nd) at the 4 Hours of Silverstone.
